Art as collaboration across communities.
For a decade, Joana contributed from London to Team Playground — a grassroots project founded around Rob Sniderman’s Bruffut Education Project and Black Star Caravan, which supports vulnerable women, reforestation, and playgrounds for children in Gambia. Each year the team collects goods across the UK and ships a full container to Africa.
In April 2023 she joined them on the ground. Travelling through Gambia and Senegal from the project’s base — “The Magic Land” — she renovated playgrounds in remote villages, painted schools, and created artwork and light installations with the team and local communities.
The project shares its roots with her London practice: the same group reused Pink Floyd’s former Britannia Row studios (2019–2021) to support local and international communities — the building where she curated Salon Apocalypse.
